“I am a man from another time. A time when there was still the feeling of death,” a stone-faced squire told Belle de jour. In his village of Calanda, Luis Buñuel also grew up feeling death. The bells of the churches still sounded the knell to accompany the deceased in the afterlife and the plañideras followed with their sobs the coffins through the alleys. He also saw the priests lift the veil of the corpses to throw a handful of ashes. From the beautiful Spanish widows creped in black in Mexico to the Santa Muerte, this fervent thanatophilia has never been extinguished, unrolling a long series of nocturnal cemeteries, desecrated vaults and especially young dead with unaltered beauty. Luis Buñuel’s surrealism is dark and gothic, drawing on sadistic black novels and decadent literature.
